What does a successful skincare routine look like? Well, for starters, it shouldn’t be complicated. It should be easy to follow and relatively quick to do from start to finish and you should have clear steps to follow morning and evening.
It is necessary to have a good skincare routine in order to age gracefully and keep your skin looking youthful, bright and healthy looking.
How do you know when it is working?
Well, the simple answer is that you will know when it’s working because your skin will look healthy, you won’t need to wear make-up all of the time to cover it up and you will feel confident in the knowledge that it feels firm, smooth and hydrated.
So how many steps?
In short, 5 basic steps is what is needed to bring your skin into good healthy and keep it there.
- Cleanse with cleansing balm
- Hydrate with the facial mist suitable for your skin type
- Serum to treat specific skin concerns
- Balm to replenish essential fatty acids
Of course, there are extra steps you can add, such as exfoliation and a mask weekly and although I would recommend doing the extra steps to get the maximum results, the five basic steps are what’s needed to get you on the way to looking and feeling amazing.
I also recommend to use a sun protection factor over everything to help slow down the effects of sun damage as you age.
1. Take the time you need
Relax and take the time you need so you can do your routine at a time when its suits instead of rushing. In the morning, give yourself just a few minutes and take a little extra time in the early evening to enjoy taking the time to massage in the treatment products in the correct sequence. Get comfortable and make sure you will stay comfortable for the length of time it takes. The evening routine should take 5-10 minutes if you are doing it correctly. Sometimes, standing in front of a mirror is not the best place to take the time to massage in your treatment products and application is just as important as the actual ingredients in there.
2. Slow down (the product application)
Don’t get in to the habit of rushing when it comes to your skincare routine. Familiarize yourself with the products and what they do, so that you can apply the products correctly and to make sure you get the benefit from the practice.
3. Observe any changes in your skin
Develop an awareness of what your skin looks and feels like and adapt with the changes in your skin. If a certain part of your face needs some extra hydration or a little more oil if it’s a little dry, then do just that. One size does not fit all when it comes to skincare and you will inevitably get a much better result if you make the changes as they occur instead of waiting for the big breakout or flakiness to be a problem before you give a little extra attention.
4. Choose natural ingredients…Always
Natural ingredients are king. Sometimes, when you read big hype marketing, it can be easy to believe that there are magic potions out there that will show results sooner but it is not the best practice. Honestly, patience and regularity is how results are achieved. Skincare products with harsh chemical ingredients are going to be bad for your skin in the long run and also bad for your body as your blood stream and internal organs have to find ways to metabolise and eliminate these, as everything that is applied onto the skin will eventually end up in the blood stream.
5. Include a mask application into your weekly routine.
A weekly and ideally twice weekly facial mask application will ensure that your skin will stay bright, healthy, revitalised and help to slow the onset of lines and wrinkles. Best used after a full facial exfoliation to ensure that the mask is treating the new good skin cells instead of the old declining skin cells ready to be renewed.
