Are You Drinking Enough Water?
Is your urine clear? If not, chances are, you’re not drinking enough water. We’ve all probably heard plenty about the importance of drinking more water. We all know the eight glasses rule a day and we all know we should have more when working up a sweat or drinking alcohol but do we do it? Your body is composed of about 60% water. Drinking water helps to maintain the balance of body fluids. The functions of these fluids include digestion, circulation, creation of saliva, absorption, transportation of nutrients, excretion, and maintenance of body temperature. The eight glasses a day is just a guideline, exactly how much water your body needs changes each day. Here’s some tips to help you stay hydrated:
Drink a glass of cold water first thing in the morning. A glass of ice cold water in the morning speeds up metabolism and wakes up the digestive system. Get it in before you hit the coffee.
Use a glass bottle or BPA free plastic if refilling your bottle. If you have a bottle of water at your fingertips, you will find, you will unconsciously drink more water throughout the day. Just make sure that your bottle is free from BPA (Bisphenol-A is a chemical found in polycarbonate plastic). BPA can be released from the plastic over time when the bottle is reused. It mimics oestrogen in the body and can alter hormone levels and influence endocrine response. Basically, there is a ton of evidence out there that it is toxic for humans.
Substitute water for soda or coffee at lunch. Eliminate that sugary drink or unhealthy coffee during the day to get more water into your system. Sometimes that soda or coffee is just a habit. I have started replacing some of my coffees with green tea and I love it.
Drink a glass of water half an hour before each meal. This works a treat if you want to cut back, as it will take the edge off your appetite. It’s hard to remember but when you do, it will aid digestion and it’s better than washing down your food with too much water.
Water and wine. When you’re enjoying a cocktail, glass of wine or two, try to drink at least half a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you have. It’s a good way to prevent a hangover too.
Form a habit. Drinking water is a habit and when you get used to it, you will find your digestion better, increased energy, and brighter healthier skin.
